The paintings by Thierry Feuz represent a neo-baroque journey in times of post-modern enlightenment. It’s neo-baroque because the work is full of opulence, movement and emotions; journey because the associated themes circle from the universe over life-size flowers and zoomed blossoms to micro-cosmoses and nano-worlds; post-modern because the artistic concept plays with fragmented and deconstructed elements of memory and culture; and finally it’s enlightening because the pictures open the view through a focused rationality to new and complementary realities. The balanced compositions, the audacious color combinations, the use of strong paints, the clarity and cleanness of the structures, the elaborated design of the single painted elements and the lack of classical perspective as well as the depth of focus by means of the blurring of some depicted elements are inherent parts of all works. As the images always oscillate between abstraction and figuration, there is no direct narration but a lot of space for interpretation. Nevertheless the bright colors are spreading out on the canvas like a firework and are generating either biomorphic shapes or, in another series of paintings, geometric horizontal lines. The fascinating pictures with its color explosions and psychedelic plays of shapes, structures and patterns leave a deep impression without the understanding at first sight.
Louise Hindsgavl’s fascination with mutants that are part human, part animal does not spring from a love of science fiction or interest in new experimentation in inter-special transplantation. She is bringing to the forefront people’s second nature – the side of human nature governed by pure instinct that lurks behind a polished surface unchecked by the conscious self. Hindsgavl uses exaggeration as an effective way of making us laugh. Thus her figurines not only hold a place in ceramic circles of popular culture, they also relate to popular storytelling and cartoons. The author Marina Warner tells us in her book, “Fantastic Metamorphoses, Other Worlds” that stories about animals that become human and humans that become animals are transitional stories that express conflict and insecurity. The characters in these stories reveal poisonous truths about themselves as do Hindsgavl’s figurines. The essence of the story that she is telling with porcelain can perhaps be summarized with the word burlesque. This word is French and means extravagant, comical, untamed, fantastic and rude.
